Not all frugal hacks are created equal. Some save serious money, and others really just waste your time. I’ve tested dozens of them, and these are the 21 frugal living hacks that actually worked for me and helped us cut hundreds off our monthly budget.
Here’s the list I follow every month- and I made them into a free printable format at the end of this post for you to stick on your fridge!
Home & Utilities
1. Wash Laundry in Cold Water
Clothes last longer + lower energy bill. Worth every penny.
2. Unplug Devices When Not in Use
Especially chargers, TVs, toasters — phantom power is real.
3. Use Fans Instead of AC
Circulate air instead of cooling whole rooms on days that it isn’t super hot.
4. Dry Clothes on a Rack (Even Partway)
Cut dryer use time in half and truly adds up over time!
5. Use LED Bulbs (And keep them off during the day!)
Last forever + lower electricity costs long term.

Grocery & Kitchen
6. Shop Your Pantry First
Build meals from what you already own before making a list.
7. Switch to Frozen Veggies
Less waste + longer shelf life = more savings.
8. Only Grocery Shop Once a Week
Fewer trips = fewer impulse buys. Impulse buys are what my family was spending ALOT of money on, so cutting this back saved us alot.
9. Meal Plan Around What’s on Sale
Check flyers or use grocery apps like Flipp or Flashfood. It takes an extra few minutes, but it can save you tons.
10. Eat Simple, Repeatable Meals
We rotate the same 10–15 meals. No decision fatigue, no overspending. This doesn’t mean you can’t experiment or try new things, but having a solid rotation within a budget you can expect first, will allow you to track what you’re splurging on easier.

Lifestyle & Habits
11. Track Every Dollar (Even the $3 Ones)
Awareness = control. You’ll spend less just by noticing, and watch your savings slowly grow.
12. Use Cash-Only Envelopes for Discretionary Spending
When the cash is gone, you’re done. This is a HUGE hack that has changed our lives.
13. Freeze Leftovers Immediately
Stops food waste and future takeout temptations. I can not tell you how many times left overs get hidden in the back of my fridge and then go bad. Freeze them right away and write them down on a sheet so you remember what you have!
14. Have 4 “No-Spend” Days Each Week
Literally mark them off like a challenge. Going into town? Make a coffee and bring it with you before you leave. Make the commitment and make it a game!
15. Limit Subscriptions to One at a Time
Rotate services, I promise you won’t miss anything and the things you want or need will still be there for later when you switch. This is a HUGE money waster.

Personal & Family
16. Cut Your Own Hair (Or Learn Basic Trims)
Even doing this every 2–3 haircuts saves a ton, especially if you have small kids or a partner who’s willing to let you cut their hair!
17. DIY Manicures
Once you get the hang of it, it’s just as relaxing. A small investment can be made on cheap sites like amazon, and it will truly save you 50+ a month!
18. Use the Library (Books, Movies, Audiobooks)
Free is the new flex. Old is in. You would truly be surprised what you’ll find at the local library if you look hard enough! We ALWAYS don’t need the newest forms of entertainment to be entertained.
19. Plan Free Family Fun (Picnics, Nature Walks, Game Nights)
Some of our favorite memories came from no-spend weekends. Honestly time spent is the most important thing.
20. Buy Secondhand First
Clothes, furniture, toys — always check Marketplace or thrift first. I can not tell you the amount of money I’ve saved simply by looking on Marketplace for something first!
21. Ask Yourself “Will I Regret Buying or Not Buying This?”
This one mindset hack stopped 80% of my impulse spending. I actually started writing things I wanted on my fridge, and every day that passed I’d ask myself this question and suddenly most things, I’d erase and realize I just did not need, or could find a swap, dupe or alternative!
